Scholar of the Week: Sara Thuston

For our fourth Scholar of the Week, we decided to go across state lines and catch up with one of our seniors who is currently in Florida interning at a job that she says "has always been a dream" of hers. Please enjoy this read with one of our seniors, Sara Thuston!

1. Describe who you are, what you are studying, class level, where you are from, what you plan on doing for the upcoming summer/semester and include some fun facts about you.
Sara: My name is Sara Thuston. I am a senior studying environmental science, with an emphasis in soil and water quality and a minor in French. I am from St. Louis, and I caddied at Algonquin Golf Club. At Mizzou, I work in the University Soil and Plant Testing Lab, am involved with a service group called Caring for Columbia, and even got to spend a semester abroad in Lyon, France. I am currently a plant science intern at Disney World in Orlando, Florida, where I started working in January. I work at Epcot in the greenhouses at The Land. I manage the tropical greenhouse as well as giving educational tours to guests wanting to learn about sustainable agriculture. When I return to St. Louis, I will be caddying and working at Tropical Moose Shaved Ice for the remainder of the summer. I will be graduating this coming December.

2. What has been your favorite memory of living in the Evans Scholarship House?
Sara: My favorite memory of living in the House was during my sophomore year. The entire house took a bus to St. Louis to go to a Cardinals game, to support a Scholar's family member being honored that night. We all sat together in the bleacher seats, and it was a great experience.

3. What has been your favorite memory being a student at Mizzou?
Sara: My favorite memory being a student at Mizzou would definitely be rushing the field after we beat Arkansas my sophomore year. The Evans Scholars always sit together in the front row, corner of the field, and everyone just ran all at once!

4. On a more serious note, how has the Evans Scholarship helped you grow as a student and as a person?
Sara: The Evans Scholarship has given me an amazing opportunity to attend a great school and major in something that I am truly passionate about. Without this scholarship and the Evans Scholars support system that comes with it, I don't know where I would be. This scholarship has allowed me to make some really amazing friendships and memories.

5. If you had a chance to spend a whole day with Chick Evans what would you do? Is there anything you would want to say to him?
Sara: I would probably spend the day either playing golf with Chick, or taking him to a Cardinals-Cubs game. His dream was to send worthy caddies to college, and I would thank him for allowing me to make my dreams a possibility.

6. Finally if you could mention one sentence about what the Scholarship has meant to you what would it be?
Sara: I am so honored to be an Evans Scholar, something that I will be for life, and I will never stop being grateful.

As mentioned earlier, Sara will be graduating this upcoming December, along with a couple of others. We are so proud of her and all of her successes that she has achieved throughout her four years in the House! An awesome role model for many and a work ethic like no other! Tune in next week for the fifth #SOTW!
